Chocolate Pudding Dump Cake

Seriously…I don’t do this…

I don’t want to give you the wrong impression. I’m honestly not like this…

I’m a good girl. I go to bed early, drink more water than wine (well, sometimes), I floss every day and always wear my sunscreen. Oh, and once in 10th grade, I totally read my entire United States history textbook just for fun. For fun!

Like I said…I don’t do this.

Well, except for this one time. And you know what? I didn’t regret it. Because somehow, this little chocolate cake made from a BOXED MIX and a PACKAGE OF PUDDING was one of the best things I’ve ever put in my mouth.

Like I said, I’m a good girl. I don’t lie.

What are you waiting for? I won’t tell if you won’t.

Bake for 30 minutes, or until edges pull away from sides.

Time:

40 minutes

Looks like a 8×8 pan was used instead of the 9×13 that recipe called for. Which is correct size to use????

          February 28, 2015 at 6:03 am

I had the same question. I made it using a 9 x 13 and it was way too thin. Not like a cake at all. Must really require an 8 x 8.

      April 29, 2013 at 12:17 pm

Love this! I used Sugar free chocolate pudding. It turned out great! Just open the pudding, mix with the milk, then dump in all the cake powder from your cake box. By the way, I used yellow cake mix because that was all I had on hand and it still turned out chocolaty and tasty! I also used about a half of a bag of the chocolate chips and when it was still warm from the oven I spread the chips over the top of the cake. Make a nice layer of “frosting” to dip into as you work your way down into the cake! Love, Love, Love this one!!! I like that it has no eggs or oil, so easy!

        February 17, 2015 at 10:07 am

I’m confused. It does NOT say instant pudding, so to “prepare pudding with milk according to directions” on box, you have to cook it. Did she mean instant pudding?

        • Shirley
          April 5, 2015 at 5:15 am

Ok not happy yes its a instant pudding but I made it in a 9x 13 like stated it is so thin its just terrible because of it it is like a bar not a cake and kind of hard not soft. I think its a 8×8 cake .Its Easter and my dessert is no good.. NOT HAPPY

Looks delicious, Jenna. Some of the best things in life are theses sorts of things. My sister makes a delicious cake from a box mix. I don’t know the exact recipe from it is all from boxes and can. I believe it is a yellow cake mix cooked in a 9 x 13 pan. While it is warm, she pokes holes in it and pours on a can of sweetened condensed milk and a can of cream de coconut. Then, she tops it will cool whip and shredded coconut and let it sit in the fridge for about 4 days. It is killer!

Recipe has never neen fixed, I used the 8 inch pan because I didn’t read these comments until later. The cake still looks good, just hope it came out. I also added 1 1/2 cups of chips as the recipe called for and it equals an entire bag. Looked like a lot of chips to me but did it anyways. Also didn’t have chocolate chips so used butterscotch. I have company coming for supper and made this cake as the dessert, hope it’ll be OK but now after reading the comments, I’m wondering. I’ll let you know.

Also, just curious, but have you tried any other variations of this? I’m thinking of trying white cake mix with caramel pudding…maybe it’ll turn out to be an easier version of my favorite dulce de leche blondies! I’m guessing you can’t really go wrong; it’s cake and pudding, who am I kidding? It’ll all taste delicious! Thanks for the “better” version of a dump cake! I’ve never been a fan of the church pot luck standard yellow cake with cherry pie filling and pineapple, so I’m glad to have an alternative!

This cake is even more amazing the next day. I ate a whole row of the pan today while the BF was at work… Well, I ate half a row, then decided if I ate the whole row it would be less noticeable when he came home. Flawed logic? Maybe. Delicious? Definitely.

No you don’t make the cake mix as directed. All you do is combine the pudding with the milk then dump it in the dry cake mix and stir. Then, bake 🙂

Jenna — I made this last night for a friend’s birthday party tonight and truly could not restrain myself. 1. The batter was delish and safe to eat (no eggs!). 2. When the cake was cooked, I cut the cake into brownie-sized squares that I could display on a platter… that way no one would notice that I had to sample a piece at the wee hours of the night. Thank you! 🙂

Your instructions say to prepare pudding as directed on package. But, I doubt we are suppose to cook the pudding first. Nor use 2 cups milk as the package calls for.

So, I cooked the pudding first, and it was hardly spreadable. Is this correct? Something was definitely wrong with the result, probably cooking the pudding first was wrong.

🙁 major fail for this one. I was super excited to use 4 ingredients and get this awesome dessert, but that was not my case. The batter was SO thick, that it would not spread evenly. I had to use a spatula, wax paper and my fingers….it was a mess. I still had hope, that it would be good, despite that fact that it was a giant clump of non-spreadable mix. The texture was sponge-y and I was hoping it would be moist, but it was not. I’m surprised no one else had a review like mine 🙁

I just prepared it and its in the oven. I am really worried about how it is going to turn out because the batter was unspreadably thick. Is the 1.5 cups of milk in addition to the milk used in the pudding recipe, or is it the total amount of milk used? Thank you!

I have been making this cake for over 20 years (without chocolate chips) I use the cooked pudding with the cake mix, put batter in an angel food cake pan. After it cools I use dental floss to cut two slices – which leave a little top piece. I then spread hot fudge, sliced bananas and fresh whipped cream and layer again … this is my Hot Fudge Whip Cream Banana Cake. The last time I made it as a trifle and it was just as good. This is definitely the best fudgy chocolate cake ever and so easy to make … I’m going to try your recipe next time.

I tried it last night. It was awful. I tried it once with the 8×8 and the 13×9. I followed the instructions to the letter. I cannot believe I wasted my time and my money on this.

I’m making this cake tonight for the second time. The first time I made it I thought it was ok but my family loved it! I did think it was hard to spread as well. Whoever reads this recipe do not cook the pudding or make the pudding. Your simply mixing the ingredients together (cake mix, pudding & milk). I use sugarfree fat free instant chocolate pudding however this time I mixed the cake, pudding and skim milk all together instead of making the pudding separate. The batter was more manageable and tasted the same as the last time. It’s in the oven…….. I also ran out of chocolate chips so I combined butterscotch and semi sweet chocolate chips together 🙂

I have the same question I’ve noticed others have: is it instant pudding or cook ‘n serve pudding? I have tried to dutifully read through all 173 comments for the answer but can’t seem to find it. PLEASE revise/update the original recipe to answer this question. I know others will also be happy you did.

And at the same time, perhaps you can clarify whether it’s an 8×8 or 9×13 pan. There’s a discrepancy between your picture, the blog directions, and the “print” directions. Thanks!

Or, do you just mix in the cake mix as soon as you have finished whisking the pudding and milk? I used instant. Thanks! Jello says let the pudding set for 5 min in fridge.

I LOVE this. My variation is I use French vanilla cake mix, white chocolate pudding, and a variation of white chocolate chips and chopped pumpkin spice wafers. It’s delicious!

Great recipe. Made this for kiddos with egg allergies and it was perfect. You don’t evn need as much Choco Chips as recipe calls for.

I’m a little confused. You said to follow pudding package directions, then list 1 1/2 c. milk in your cake directions. Do I add the 2 c. milk called for in the pudding directions or the 1 and 1/2 c. on your cake direction? Looks delicious, by the way!

Is there a reason the recipe calls for a 9×13 pan and your picture shows a square 8 or 9″ baking pan?

My question is do you use an 8 inch square pan or 9 x 13? The printed out version says 8″, and the picture clearly shows an 8″ glass dish.

    Hi,
I’m a little confused by the pan used in this recipe and I noticed a few other people were also. The recipe says to use a 9×13 inch pan, but you have a 8×8 pan pictured. I scrolled through lots of comments to see if you answered the question, but didn’t see a reple. Can you please clarify what sixe pan should be used? Thanks so much!!

The directions state 9×13, but the picture looks like a square baking dish. Please verify which size to use. Thanks!

I just made these this evening. I used an instant sugar-free chocolate pudding mix and a sugar-free chocolate cake mix. I wasn’t sure how it would turn out using the sugar-free mixes but I think it turned out good. It’s more like a brownie than cake . I had to have a scoop of Breyer’s carbsmart vanilla ice cream with it too. I want to try putting peanut butter chips on top instead of semi-sweet chips next time. Will definitely make again and try different variations.

I made this with red velvet cake mix and instant cheesecake pudding. Unfortunately the cheesecake flavor didn’t come thru. However, it was wonderful! I made this in a 9×13 with instant pudding. I mixed the 1 1/2 cups milk with the pudding mix for about a minute then added the cake mix. It is really thick and I had difficulty spreading it in the pan. I ended up spraying my hands with cooking spray then patting the mix down into the pan. I will be trying this more with different flavor combos, like white cake mix and coconut pudding with choc chips and coconut flakes on top, lemon cake mix with lemon pudding and white choc chips, choc with caramel pieces on top… MMmm the possibilities seem endless! Thanks for the recipe!

Hey Jenna! I am all ready to make this but looking at the picture, it looks like a 9×9 cake pan rather than a 9×13. Please advise.

The pan in the picture is an 8×8 definitely not a 9×13….will this work in a 9×13??

I just made this and it was so thick I could barely stir it. It was very difficult to spread in the pan as well. Even though the recipe called for a 9×13 inch pan, your photo looks like the cake is in an 8×8 inch pan. I hope it turns out, it looked flat.

I found the answers everyone is asking about. Here are the answers:

I baked mine in a square baking dish because I halved the recipe. To bake the whole recipe, use a 9 x 13 baking dish

Jenna, I want to make this for a family dinner this week. Did you use “Cook n Serve” or “Instant” chocolate pudding mix?
    REPLY
    jenna April 7, 2011 at 10:30 am
you can use either! I used instant but using cook and serve would be fine, too. Just make sure you make the pudding with milk, not water!

Question: it says here to use a 9 x 13 inch pan….but on your printable recipe page it says to use an 8-inch pan….which is correct? ?

you state to make pudding as directed which calls for 2 cups of milk. So do I use a total of 3 1/2 cups or 1 1/2?

Looks delicious! Just wondered if that is instant pudding or not…If not, do you cook the pudding according to the pudding box? also, your dish looks like an 8×8 dish..what size would be the best to use? Thanks!
