Behind The Butter

Our Wedding 5.25.13

456Jenna_AdamIMG_9510

Finally! I am so excited to share with you an intimate look at our wedding day.

We got married on May 25th in Austin, Texas at Pecan Springs Ranch. We found the venue last Christmas when it was still under construction, but I fell in love with the owner’s vision for the place and knew it would be perfect for us. I always knew I wanted an outdoor wedding in a prairie-like setting and Pecan Springs Ranch totally fit that vision.

All these photos are courtesy of our photographer, Astrid. Astrid has been an ELR reader for years and after chatting with her briefly, I knew she would do a spectacular job shooting our wedding. I couldn’t have been happier with the way our photos turned out, plus she is a totally lovely person and a joy to work with. I highly recommend her!

04Jenna_AdamIMG_1169

06Jenna_AdamIMG_1172

The venue was actually built on an old homestead from the 1800s, and I think the most special part was the old fireplace that we got married in front of. The fireplace was part of the original home and had children’s names scratched into the brick. Just writing about it gives me shivers…it was very, very cool.

Here’s a few photos of us girls getting ready in the adorable brides house, circa 1940. Our wedding color was cornflower blue, and all my girls were matching blue sundresses that I found on clearance from BHLDN. At $60 a pop, they were a total steal and absolutely adorable!

I bought all my bridesmaids FashionABLE scarves to throw over their dress during the reception in case they got chilly. They LOVED the scarves!! They also wore Noonday earrings and Stella & Dot gold bangles.

And now for the story about my dress.

25Jenna_AdamIMG_8758

To be totally honest, the dress wasn’t the highest priority of mine. I had no desire to spend thousands on a dress I would wear for a few hours. That’s just not me. I’d rather put more money towards the food! Anyway, I found this short party dress on BHLDN and instantly knew it was a winner. It’s the “sequin stash dress” in case you’re wondering. I ordered it online, it fit like a glove and I paired it with a sparkly necklace {also from BHLDN}, a short veil, kitten heels for walking down the aisle and my fav cowboy boots for dancing later! 🙂

31Jenna_AdamIMG_1360

440Jenna_AdamIMG_9473

It truly was exactly the “laid back prairie-style” look I was going for. I HIGHLY recommend short wedding dresses! It made dancing later super fun, especially since my dress had a tight pink sequin layer underneath. It was the ultimate party dress and I felt like a princess in it.

As for the flowers, I got together with a couple of my bridesmaids two days before the wedding and we made them all by hand. It saved tons of money and was really fun! I wanted everything to be bright, colorful and sort of messy. No matchy matchy bouquets here!

196Jenna_AdamIMG_8900

My amazing wedding coordinator, Christine, doubled as our florist. Seriously, if you’re getting married in Austin I can’t recommend Christine enough. She was fabulous and I don’t think we could have done it without her. In fact, I know we couldn’t have done it without her. Twenty minutes before the ceremony started, all electricity was lost at the venue and Christine held everything and everyone together perfectly. Our band and caterers ran on generators all night and hundreds of candles were lit for dinner. Right when I walked down the aisle to Adam I whispered that we got our “real prairie wedding” with no electricity and he burst out laughing. It was so us, power or not.

320Jenna_AdamIMG_1826

Here are some more ceremony photos. I can’t even tell you how special our ceremony was. It signified our union in Christ and the covenant we now share. We chose two passage of scripture, one from the old testament {ruth 1: 16-17} and one from the new testament {mark 10: 6-9}. It was also very special to have a good friend marry us!

Our gorgeous ceremony programs were custom designed by Tricia at The Memory Trunk. I can’t recommend her enough – she did a beautiful job on our programs that totally fit the rustic look we were going for.

251Jenna_Adam9Y6C0208

Our moms helped us so much with decor! My mom made these mason jar vases that we hung on the ceremony end chairs. They were so bright and beautiful!

Adam’s mom made all the centerpieces for the tables. She used reclaimed wood from their property to make these wood “cookies” then she found collected all the vintage bottles we used as vases.

498Jenna_Adam9Y6C0280

499Jenna_Adam9Y6C0288

491Jenna_Adam9Y6C0273

All other vintage decorations were provided by Pecan Springs Ranch! Christine decorated the entire place for us and it just looked fabulous with vintage typewriters, books and yard games.

522Jenna_AdamIMG_9256

One of the coolest things we did was this fun seating chart! I wrote all of our guest’s names down on doilies I bought from a craft store then pinned them up with wooden clothes pins on this wire frame to correspond with their table number. It was a big hit!

515Jenna_Adam9Y6C0353

I also made this huge Eat Local Organic sign that we propped up. I painted it last winter when we were visiting Adam’s family over Christmas. His mom made the other signs!

511Jenna_Adam9Y6C0328

506Jenna_Adam9Y6C0318

Those little burlap wrapped thingies in the first photo are our wedding favors! Adam made e-books that we loaded on flash drives for everyone. The e-books contained a dozen different playlists synced to Spotify of our favorite songs along with photos and quotes from our favorite books.

And now let’s talk about FOOD! We used Royal Fig Catering in Austin and they were just lovely. We picked a menu of roast chicken, macaroni and cheese with brie, dates and bacon, roast heirloom carrots and brown butter cornbread. Delicious comfort food for all!

And spicy guavaritas to drink! These spicy tequila cocktails were definitely the hit of the party.

479Jenna_AdamIMG_9633

We also had old school cokes in big galvanized tubs for easy sippin’!

544Jenna_Adam9Y6C0465

As for our cake, we used the extremely talented Hayley at Cecelia’s Austin. She was fabulous. We chatted on the phone because I couldn’t get in for a tasting and I told her exactly what I wanted — a very simple, yet very delicious carrot cake with no “frilly things” like pineapple, nuts or raisins. Just plain ol’ carrot cake with cream cheese frosting layers and buttercream on the top.

501Jenna_Adam9Y6C0256

I’m telling you, Adam and I are STILL talking about that cake and how good it was. I’m so glad my mom snatched the top tier to take home and freeze for us to eat on our first anniversary! I highly recommend working with Hayley if you need a great wedding cake. She’s the best!!

500Jenna_Adam9Y6C0260

Like our wooden cake topper? Kacia made it! That girl is mega talented.

We decided to go the band route instead of a DJ. We used The Pearl Tones and they were wonderful! Despite no electricity, our wedding was a dance.party. It was awesome! I would book them again in a heartbeat. They are so insanely talented!

693Jenna_AdamIMG_9814

695Jenna_AdamIMG_9817

674Jenna_AdamIMG_9795

Here’s us and Astrid! Again, I can’t recommend her enough as a wedding photographer. She lives in DC but will travel to wherever you are!

770Jenna_AdamIMG_9964

Whew! I think that pretty much covers it. I think one of the best decisions Adam and I made was to leave the wedding at 10:30pm and head to our hotel. We drove ourselves in our maroon rental car, and right after the car door slammed and we pulled out into the dusty Texas night, we shared a brief moment of silence then looked at each other and just burst out laughing hysterically. We did it! We got married! I still can’t even believe it really happened. And man, that night goes by so fast.

789Jenna_AdamIMG_0054

I also loved that we left immediately on our honeymoon. I know some couples say they appreciated having a few days before leaving, but we loved leaving the next day as a newly married couple. We were running on pure adrenaline at that point! It was the best.

I know all brides probably say that their day was absolutely perfect, and I’m no different. It really was perfect for us…..a huge dance party out in the country with good food and all our best friends. It was so “us”, despite not having any electricity! Just simple and enjoyable. We are so thankful for all the extra help our friends and family gave us getting ready for our big day! We couldn’t have done it without them.

Here’s our vendor list! I highly recommend each and every one of them. They were wonderful to work with in every possible way.

Jenna, I love your wedding… The low key, no fuss, rustic, good food, dancing, and all that. But by far, my favorite is your bouquet. It is super gorgeous! So fun, happy, and classy at the same time. I love how it seems like you went out in the meadow and brought home a bunch of beautiful wild flowers. And also, you are one gorgeous bride!

Jenna this is such a beautiful post and thanks for sharing it! I know it probably took forever to upload all these pics, too – but they’re all appreciated! You looked gorgeous and I got married in a short wedding dress, too. Mine was hot pink and it made dancing later that night easy – no long dress to worry about and showed no dirt 🙂 I love the photos – your photographer did an amazing job. All the behind the scenes details she captured. And I especially love the shot of you and your dad walking down the aisle. And those boots, too! 🙂 Congrats!

Whenever I decide to get married, I’ll absolutely be the one to save $$$ on the dresses… it really isn’t practical to bust a budget on a dress when there are so many gorgeous ones out there for less! The length is such a neat idea too. Just makes it unique and it keeps it all simple! Congratulations to both of you!

Yay! Congrats! I love the short dress. I wore a short dress too. I don’t know about you, but one thing I looked into when buying my dress was being able to wear it again. I didn’t spend a fortune on it, but is definitely one of the fancier things in my closet and I like knowing that I can get more use out of it on other special occasions like anniversaries!

Beautiful pictures, thank you for sharing. I also appreciate your comments about your dress. I am getting married this fall and am having an awful time finding a dress b/c I (a) don’t want to spend a thousand dollars on something I will wear for about 6 hours and (b) don’t want a strapless mermaid style dress (that is about 80% of dresses right now). I was starting to feel like something is wrong with me, but your comments (and lovely dress) reminded me that it is just one piece of a much larger event.

So gorgeous! You both look so happy & in love. Can you share a bit about how/whether you incorporated anything into your day in memory of you brother? It was something I really struggled with while planning ours– ultimately I pinned a bit of one of my brother’s dress shirts, cut in the shape of a heart, onto my crinoline as my something blue.

Also: the millionth things we have in common: we have the same middle name 🙂

Gosh, Jenna. I have no idea where to even begin. I will say that each picture I saw was better than the last. The capture of you and your dad is just phenomenal, and I can feel the joy in every image. It was a gorgeous wedding, which doesn’t surprise me in the least, but beyond the beauty of the surroundings and the description of the cake (um, yum??) the love and friendship of the day is so, so apparent. I wish you and Adam all the best.

BTW, hubby and I are headed to Switzerland and Italy to celebrate our tenth anniversary later this year, and I have to tell you that as soon as I read “chocolate train” and fondue, I sent a link to that post to hubby as a very.subtle.hint.

Jenna, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Everything! After meeting you, it comes as no surprise that you’d want to veer from the stuffy traditional version of a wedding that is so popular these days. I’m reminded of a comment I overheard, many years ago at a girlfriend’s wedding. An older lady said (about the bride) “She’s actually enjoying her own wedding.” Huh? Wha? Apparently you were just there to be part of a spectacle. Anyway, it’s obvious that you had a blast! For my 2nd wedding I wore a tea length sundress, and had a band, absolutely the best idea for having a good ole party…but then that groom was a good ole Texas boy, they make the best husbands :-).
I wish you and Adam many years of great happiness.

Yes! Something old: my mom’s garter with my grandpas pendant from WW2 sewn in. Something borrowed: my grandmas pearl earrings. Something blue: my bracelet and the blue on my cowboy boots! 🙂 and no, didn’t have the camera that night so not a ton of food photos!

I LOVE IT!!! The short dress was very unexpected! Good choice! When I first saw the kitten heels I thought “not boots?!!”… but, alas… 🙂 Everything is just gorgeous. That is exactly the style I went for with my wedding a few years ago. We got married in Guerneville, CA (we live in Phx, AZ) in a huge packyard along the Russian River, family decorated with flowers from the farmers’ market, lots of vintage touches, short dress, carrot cake in the form of cupcakes from Downtown Creamery in Healdsburg, … Anyway, LOVE your style 🙂 ! Congratulations to you and thank you for sharing!

I loved reading this post. You got engaged after me, but got married about a month and a half before me, so it had been following along with your progress. The photos are great! Everything looks wonderful and low key weddings are definitely the way to go. We had so many similarities between our weddings, so that was fun to see!

Congrats on your marriage and to a happy future! <3

Man you take a break from blogs, and BAM, people get married! Royal Fig catered my wedding in Austin too, 3 years ago. They were JUST starting out, our tasting was actually in their backyard because we were literally one of their first customers. We booked them almost a full year before our wedding, which was in May. When our wedding rolled around, they were entirely booked up for the remainder of that year. They are amazing and I would recommend them to anyone – glad you loved them too! Congrats 🙂

So I’m getting married at Pecan Springs Ranch next September and was wondering if you had any planning advice – what additional PSR accessories are great to use, any venue related issues such as with food service or bartending that you might have seen arise.

I love the venue and we just had our engagement photos done there last weekend. It simply was made for a rustic, country wedding!
