Behind The Butter

Thanks, Mom

Well, it was bound to happen at some point.

I don’t even remember the last time I was sick. I think it was back when I was doing my culinary externship in 2008. For the past two years I’ve bragged to all my friends that I never get sick. I’m always the one that takes care of the sick people. I’m the friend that’s always there, bringing homemade soup, tea and kleenex. Germs don’t affect me. I thought myself immune.

Until yesterday.

I woke up yesterday morning with a scratchy throat but I thought it was just allergies. Because I’m a freak, I still went on a two mile run in the cold drizzly rain and wind. I know. I KNOW.

Throughout the course of the day I felt progressively worse and worse, and then hit rock bottom late last night. My throat hurts, my nose is congested and I’m achy. I debated staying one more day in Wisconsin and milking the whole mom and grandma card, but somehow I got myself on the plane this morning after zero sleep with a big cup of jasmine green tea, a packed lunch from grandma and a make-up bag full of kleenex and nose spray.

Blah.

Blah blah blah BLAH.

You know the worst part? I probably gave my mom my ninja disease as well because we shared a bed and I was up blowing my nose all.night.long. Happy Mother’s Day, mom! Love you!

I blame the state of Wisconsin. Sorry, but we have a thing called sunshine in California and I’ve been doing just fine in it. Wisconsin, you can take your freezing rain, candy raisins and fake Indians and just go away. It’s my blog and I can cry if I want to.
Anyways, here are some cute mother daughter photos to tide you over until I recover in California. Currently, I’m on route to Phoenix and then I have a three hour layover until my flight to San Francisco leaves later this afternoon.

Mom, I love you.
Thanks for always putting up with me throughout all the hysterical phone calls, snot, sore throats, homesickness, tummy aches, spontaneous backfire ideas and Anthropologie credit card charges. I’m proud to be your daughter.

I have a theory about healthy people and getting sick. I think that b/c we try to take good care of ourselves we only get “super bugs” the kind that knock you on your butt! I never get sick, but when I do I usually have to stay in bed all day(s)
I hope you feel better soon!

Hope you feel better soon. I live in WI and hardly ever get sick. When I lived in NoCal, I always got sick! We’re opposites. Maybe it was that I was depressed by my environment out there, even with sunshine, I was not happy. To each his own I guess, right? I would blame the plane ride–I know too many people who catch stuff on planes and feel sick a couple days after.

Isn’t that ALLLLLLL the truth?! I love my mother soooo much it’s ridiculous. But, when I was 17 and she was 36 (and totally Eva Marie Saint Beautiful!) she became a Grandmother! And today ‘our baby’, my son, called from Amsterdam and said, ‘If you’re happy–I’m happy.’ Any hardship and every sacrifice we all made is worth it and paid-off by that comment. He is the world’s greatest son. How lucky am I to say that?!

Today, when should be getting ready to move into new place tomorrow (still in Carmel and with an AMAZING garden) instead of going out to invited breakfast or getting reeady to move, etc, could NOT put down Donald Spoto’s ‘Enchantment’ his bio about Audrey Hepburn. READ THIS all the way through. Will SOOOO improve anyone’s life. Have no idea what an incredible woman she was until do!!

Happy Mummy’s Day to You, your Mother and Grandmother!!

Arrrggg what is it with cold+’flu viruses at the moment?! I’ve very kindly caught Man Flu off my Dad- after slightly making a point about men making more of a fuss when they are ill than women. But its arrived just in time for exam period so I’m allowed to be grumpy right? Its a sign of a good immune system if you rarely get ill but then, when you do, get it really bad- its not the bug making you feel bad, its your body waging war on the little invaders. Sunshine/UV definitely kills bugs too, bring on the sun! Oh, and to the others- I think recently when Jenna has been ill, it has been due to migraines- slightly different from being ill from infections… hope you arrived back safely with some welcoming sunshine! P.S. Bad joke- how many Mums does it take to change a light bulb? None. They’ve already done it. Oh dear. No hope for me whatsoever.
